Que em 1977, durante o ponto mais alto da carreira do Lynyrd Skynyrd, a banda sofreu um acidente de avião, acidente esse que matou o ex-vocalista, Ronny Van Zant, o ex-guitarrista Steve Gaines, o piloto e o co-piloto do avião, o roadie da banda e Cassie Gaines, integrante do trio de backing vocals do Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Por causa do acidente a banda encerrou as atividades em 1977, porém, voltaram em 1987, com Johnny Van Zant, irmão mais novo do falecido vocalista da banda.
