Skipping Stones

Alison Moyet

I knew that I would find you here
give an inch you take a year
I shouldn’t have to wait that long
I give you time but now it’s gone
I see red and I see blue
I seem to have no faith in you
You got a bag that I won’t take
to get you clean from the mess you make
When you left me on my own
I spent a minute by the phone
then I remembered who I was
and all the things that got me lost
I set a ruby in your hand
you took it up and passed it round
spun it out and let it fall
like it was nothing much at all
(skim my precious stone on the water)

And if you didn’t see the light on the water
you never saw me
And if you didn’t feel the love all around
you ain’t looking to see
Careless eyes careless ears foolish eyes
not to heed not to hear the drum in your chest
Skip it like the rest a gift to the river
You give it your best

Could be that I don’t understand
what it takes to be a man
All the weight up in your head
and all the words that you never said
You want sheer, a perfect rose
greener grass and purple prose
I want a minute to myself
I didn’t give to no one else
I get you up and I get you down
You’re getting out then you’re coming round
You look high and you look low
You think I’ve got no place to go
I set a diamond in your hand
You took it up and you passed it round
spun it out and let it fall
like it was nothing much at all
