Soft Hands

Michael Runion

when I sleep I face the east
My bed's a burning ember
When you're dreaming of another you must keep her on your mind
I'm bound from hand to feet
Trying hard to make the winter
When you're looking to the future's when you tend to fall behind
The knives inside my throat
No were not meant for your body
They were there to hold me, from speakin' all my mind
Once you left the coast
I prayed you'd come to see me
The naked children swimming ask about you all the time
LOOK, to the west
I promise you will find mfe
I'm the one with soft hands and the bruises on his face
And don't forget
Why we started fighting
Remember how exciting, how it felt to feel afraid
I wrote another play
But I fired all the actors
They said they wouldn't practice all the lines they saw me steal
When I finally found a stage
The ground was glass and ashes
And all the burning crosses couldn't keep them in their seats
I'm lying 'neath the trees
Lifeless as your laughter
But if you take me back girl, I promise you a smile
We'll slip into the streets
Drunk as lonely soldiers
We'll own the night like vandals til the morning burns our eyes.
